چکیده
Gravity currents contribute to the transport of heat and mass in atmospheric aquatic environments. In systems subject daily surface cooling, gravity propagate through turbulent convective surroundings. Yet, effects thermal convection on remain be quantified. This paper demonstrates how interaction between penetrative downslope impacts fluid dynamics across littoral systems. We performed field experiments a wind-sheltered lake experiencing differential cooling resolve thermally driven Our situ observations reveal that plumes penetrate currents, generating large vertical fluctuations foster erosion stratified layer. enhanced mixing destroys flow limits basin-scale transport. results demonstrate controls littoral-pelagic connectivity ecosystems.

Penetrative Convection within the Anelastic Approximation
We present a method for studying penetrative convection within the anelastic approximation. This method is then applied to two-dimensional numerical simulations of a convective region bounded below by a stable (radiative) region. Descending plumes penetrate into the stable layer, exciting gravity waves with a spectrum of frequencies limited by the ‘‘Brunt-Väisäla’’ frequency. The depth of penet...
متن کاملNonlocal transport of passive scalars in turbulent penetrative convection
We present a Green's function approach for quantifying the transport of a passive scalar (tracer) field in three-dimensional simulations of turbulent convection. Nonlocal, nondiffusive behavior is described by a transilient matrix (the discretized Green's function), whose elements contain the fractional tracer concentrations moving from one subvolume to another as a function of time. The approa...
متن کاملPenetrative internally heated convection in two and three dimensions
Convection of an internally heated fluid, confined between top and bottom plates of equal temperature, is studied by direct numerical simulation in two and three dimensions. The unstably stratified upper region drives convection that penetrates into the stably stratified lower region. The fraction of produced heat escaping across the bottom plate, which is one half without convection, initially...
متن کاملPenetrative convection and multi-component diffusion in a porous medium
Linear instability and nonlinear energy stability analyses are developed for the problem of a fluid-saturated porous layer stratified by penetrative thermal convection and two salt concentrations. Unusual neutral curves are obtained, in particular non-perfect ‘heartshaped’ oscillatory curves that are disconnected from the stationary neutral curve. These curves show that three critical values of...
متن کاملPenetrative convection in stratified fluids: velocity and temperature measurements
The flux through the interface between a mixing layer and a stable layer plays a fundamental role in characterizing and forecasting the quality of water in stratified lakes and in the oceans, and the quality of air in the atmosphere. The evolution of the mixing layer in a stably stratified fluid body is simulated in the laboratory when “Penetrative Convection” occurs. The laboratory model consi...
